Nutriveda is a reference site about food: what is in it, what it does, and how to cook it. Every number comes from a named public database and every health claim links to its source. This page tells you how the site is organised, what the numbers mean, and where to start if you only have five minutes.
What you will find here
- Encyclopedia. One entry per food, diet, vitamin, mineral and supplement: nutrition per 100 g, what the evidence says, how to choose, store and use it. Start with lentils or extra virgin olive oil to see the format.
- Recipes. Mostly Mediterranean, mostly one pot, always with nutrition per serving calculated from the actual ingredient weights. Try the red lentil soup with lemon.
- Guides. Longer pieces that connect the entries: the Mediterranean diet for beginners is the one to read first.
What the numbers mean
Nutrition values come from the USDA FoodData Central database and are given per 100 g of the food, raw unless the table says otherwise. Recipes are calculated per serving, where a serving is a share of the pot. Where we show how much of a day’s needs a food covers, the reference is the EFSA Dietary Reference Values for adults. Every entry lists the record IDs it used, so you can check them. The full method, including how we round and what we do when studies disagree, is on Sources and methods.
How to use the site in five minutes
- Search the food you are holding. The first paragraph of each entry answers the question in the title; the table below it gives the numbers.
- Look at the “How to use it” section before the “Benefits” section. Knowing how to cook something changes what you eat more than knowing its vitamin content.
- Follow the links in the entry to two or three related foods and one recipe. That is how the site is meant to be read.
- Use the FAQ at the end of each entry for the quick questions (“Do red lentils need soaking?”).
- If a number looks wrong, tell us. Corrections are made on the page, with the review date updated.
Who writes this
The Nutriveda editorial team writes and checks every entry against the sources listed in it. There is no sponsored content and no company pays for a sentence on this site. More on the About page.
